IT'S ALL CHANGE AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER 2018!

This means that there will be a large group of people who qualify for a Grant now, but won't from October.

The Government Home Insulation Grant Scheme is changing again on 1/10/18. In some ways it is an improvement over the current scheme, but other aspects have got a whole lot worse.

At the moment there are 2 types of Grant.

  • The Standard Grant - Everyone qualifies for this Grant (even Richard Branson).
  • The Enhanced Grant - this Grant is only available to those on some form of benefit, such as Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit, Universal Credit etc.

On 1st October 2018 the qualification for the Enhanced Grant will be made easier, e.g. you will qualify if you are in receipt of Child Benefit (Family Allowance) - so you will not need a "Tax Credit" factor, but just a child under the age of 17. DLA/PIP will qualify as well from 1/10/18.

However, the Standard Grant will be withdrawn. This mens that there will be a large group of people who qualify for a Grant now, but won't qualify for any Grant funding from September.

So let's use Cavity Wall Insulation as an example, to show what impact these changes will actually have.

At the moment everyone qualifies for the Standard Grant for Cavity Wall Insulation, and if you live in a 3 bed semi-detached house, the maximum that you would have to pay today towards the cost would be £100. From September you will have to pay the full cost - and that's £600 - £900 depending on the size of the property, unless you qualify for the new "Enhanced Grant".

CAVITY WALL INSULATION

Cavity Wall Insulation was by far the biggest winner under the current scheme - everyone qualifies for a Grant, including those who are NOT on benefits, and the quality control aspects have improved massively. To find out the full story "click or tap here".

LOFT INSULATION

Loft Insulation is by far the biggest loser under the current scheme, especially for those with no insulation in their loft. If you have between 50mm ( 2 inches) and 100mm (4 inches) you will probably be a little better off, but to get all the facts and figures "click or tap here".

A NEW TYPE OF GRANT - FLEXIBLE FUNDING

From October 2018 an additional type of Grant is being introduced, but this is only being targeted at certain areas of Wales.

This type of Grant is referred to as Flexible Funding.

Flexible Funding will be available for the following

  • Free Boiler Replacements
  • External Wall Insulation
  • Cavity Wall Insulation
  • Loft Insulation

Qualification for a Flexible Funding Grant will vary area to area, but you do not need to be on any type of benefit.

There are no real changes to the old scheme for External Wall Insulation. The Government is showing no interest nor intention to tackle the problems of old poorly insulated stone or solid brick homes, of which there 1,000's throughout S.Wales. To find out what is available "click or tap here".

THE GREEN DEAL - AN UPDATE!

The Green Deal was actually a finance mechanism, whereby energy efficiency improvements could be made to your home, through a loan, which was then repaid, with interest,  through your electricity bill.

The idea was that Energy companies, DIY companies and the like, would invest money into the "Green Deal Finance Company" - but it didn't happen, and the Coalition Government funded it.

When the Conservatives came to power in May 2015 (without the Lib Dems), they said that they would not invest anymore money into the scheme. So, The Green Deal still existed, but in practice was unable to operate.

In January 2017 The Green Deal Finance Company was purchased by a private consortium, and it is offering Green Deal Loans through the scheme, but to a very limited extent. We will keep you updated on how this progresses.
